First Place: Mystery
By David Hamlin
Winter in Chicago
On KINDLE $7.99

About Author

David M. Hamlin writes novels. Winter in Chicago (Open Books, 2016) is a mystery which holds a solid 5 Star rating on Amazon (“Sings Chicago with perfect pitch”). A sequel, Winter Gets Hot, is scheduled for publication in December, 2017.
The Winter series features Emily Winter, a young woman reporter who, in the vanguard of the second wave of feminism in the late 1960s and 70s, fights to uncover crime at the same time she fights for respect and equality in the workplace. Several allies recur in the Winter novels, including Emily’s eccentric husband Ben, Ben’s Uncle Max and the women of the Rules Committee, all of whom face sexism in their respective professions. They are joined by an expansive array of diverse and entertaining characters, among them the on-air staff at an AM rock station, a zealous District Attorney, the most eligible bachelor in Chicago, a bit-part actress, a canny male chauvinist crime reporter, a perky weatherman, media executives, lawyers and the City of Chicago. Emily’s primary work centers on issues directly related to civil liberties and justice.

David M. Hamlin is also the author of three non-fiction books including The Nazi/Skokie Conflict, A Civil Liberties Battle (Beacon Press) and Los Angeles’s Original Farmers Market (Arcadia). His early writing included freelance news and feature articles and a political satire column; as a partner in a Los Angeles public relations agency specializing in advocacy and social action, David has written countless opinion page pieces and letters, position papers, media materials, slogans, tag lines and sound bites. He also wrote the box copy for the Hot Wheels 40th Anniversary White (Gilmore Oil) 3000 Truck and Agajanian Midget Racer.
David M. Hamlin lives, writes and plays tennis in Palm Springs, California; he is married to Sydney Weisman, a former journalist and publicist who is also a professional singer.

The writing moved along very quickly but I still felt like I knew Emma like a niece or close neighbor. Great kid. The characters were complex, unique and interesting. The story develops from a small town, somewhat naïve, atmosphere to an intriguing international context. Great story.Amazon Review
